Perch is a common name for freshwater fish from the genus Perca, which belongs to the family Percidae of the of the large order Perciformes. With tiger-like stripes, red fins and a humped back, the Perch is a striking fish. It can be seen in lowland waterebodies and waterways across the UK, often in shoals.
Perca fluviatilis
This is one of the better-eating freshwater fish, but mainly viewed as an anglers’ fish and more popular on the Continent.
The usual species in Europe is Perca fluviatilis – a fish with firm white flesh and good flavour, which can be cooked like any Trout.
