A brief guide to food safety information and learning resources while at sea and on landing.
The at sea operations of fishing vessels and their crew are now monitored by food safety organisations such as the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland. The resources available on this webpage, and the support available from your local Seafishing approved training provider (ATP) may be of some help.
This compliance support guide for food preparation on-board fishing vessels is intended to provide you with the necessary knowledge and support to ensure that food prepared onboard your fishing vessel contributes to the overall food safety and health of the crew.
It is the responsibility of the skipper and the vessel operator/owner to ensure that the vessel is compliant and provides a hygienic and safe working environment for the crew.
Food hygiene guidance and regulation
At Seafish our Regulation team are able to provide advice and guidance on this topic. Also, we have regulation guidance and information on our main website.
New entrant fisher training
The three week new entrant fisher training programme contains an element of food safety training. The recommended training programme is our introductory food hygiene in the seafood industry taught course. Where it is not possible or practicable to deliver a face to face taught course then there are two appropriate alternatives.
1. Arrange for remote delivery (Using Zoom for example) by a Seafish approved food hygiene trainer for the group of trainees.
2. Use our free online Elementary Food Hygiene training programme to deliver the next level of food safety training to individual trainees.
