Squid, Cuttlefish and Octopus

These are the three forms of Cephalopods, made up of many species found in UK waters.

Species in this group

Cephalopods are an ancient class of Molluscs

Squid
European Squid

They are characterised by the way they swim – using a form of jet propulsion which squirts water out of their bodies – and by a ring of tentacles around their mouths.

All three types of Cephalopod are widely harvested and eaten in Europe.

These are the various Squids, Octopus and Cuttlefish.

Inky carnivores

Some of the earliest Cephalopods were Ammonites, now familiarly found as fossils. All Cephalopods are carnivorous and most produce ink.
