Sparidae or Bramidae families

This large group of fish from the Sparidae or Bramidae families are generally caught in the Mediterranean and off the West Coast of Africa.

Varieties include Black, Black Banded, Red, Pink, White, Yellowfin, Threadfin, Gilthead and Ray’s Bream, along with Pagre, Porgy and Dentex.

These sea fish, however, should not be confused with freshwater Bream.

Available in sizes from 300g–1kg, though the Sea bream average is around 450g, which makes Sea Bream a great fish to serve whole.

Good-sized fillets are also available from fish over 800g.

Bream can be grilled, baked, steamed, poached or pan fried. It works best with light, subtle flavours, and with any Mediterranean-style dish. Sea Bream are also farmed in the Mediterranean.

Whilst this species mainly lives in warm waters, it can also be found in cold waters such as the English Channel.
