A number of species are  commercially farmed and so are are widely consumed in the UK and Europe.  Carp and other freshwater fish have been farmed in Europe since medieval times, often by Monks.

Many freshwater fish are popular in traditional Eastern European cuisines –  Carp for instance is prized as a Christmas delicacy.

Farmed Basa from Vietnam is a freshwater species that has become commonly used in commercially produced fish dishes in the UK and elsewhere.
